Professional Accomplishments
Communications Strategy & Campaign Development Highlights
- Developed and managed pilot for $300k social mobilization and media campaign in Malawi – including branding, theatre for development, and advocacy – aimed to reduce HIV transmission to infants
- Developed 2-year communications strategy for UNICEF Malawi on implementation of the Sara Communications Initiative, a multi-media program targeting adolescent girls on health, rights and life skills
- Played key role in developing UNICEF/Government of Malawi’s 2006-2010 National Communications Strategy on Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV in Malawi
- Created and implemented all strategic communications – including brochures, website, monthly newsletter, event publicity and media relations – for US-based capacity-building consulting organization with 300 organizational members and a budget of nearly $1million
- Conducted all communications and developed strategic plan for American Ambassador to Cyprus’ $2million USAID funded peace-building initiative between Greek- and Turkish-Cypriots
- Created annual reports, brochures, white papers, collateral, newspaper ads, and other print materials for more than 30 NGO, nonprofit and corporate clients
- Wrote travel, sports, music and art reviews for magazines, books, and websites, including Fodor’s Travel Guides, citysearch.com and Runner’s World Magazine
- Developed websites, including www.greenlights.org, www.storyworkshop.org and www.jimmyandjanie.com. Increased web traffic of already existing sites by 50%- 300%.
Fund Development & Grantmaking Highlights
- Raised $350,000+ in 12 months for Malawian NGO through proposals to donors, including UNICEF and the American Embassy in Malawi, for human rights, HIV/AIDS and food security programs
- Developed first individual donor campaign for a Malawian educational media development NGO, bringing in 80+ significant gifts in first year
- Oversaw $2million USAID program that awarded significant grants to facilitate cooperation between Greek and Turkish Cypriots in technology, health, youth development, government, and education
- Administered small grants program totaling $75,000 annually focused on peace-building activities between Greek- and Turkish-Cypriots in Cyprus
- Served on advisory team to the American Ambassador in Cyprus on grassroots diplomacy efforts on the island
- Secured numerous small grants for technology, conferences and smaller events for US-based nonprofit consulting organization
Training, Education & Capacity Building Highlights
- Directed all educational programming for Austin, TX’s largest nonprofit consulting organization on issues from board development and strategic planning to financial and legal issues. Increased offerings by 50% over 3 years and tripled earned income.
- Directed Texas’ largest annual conference of nonprofit professionals, increasing participation by 20% and earned revenue by 30% in 2 years
- Managed and directed more than 60 conferences and training events per year that reached more than 1,000 nonprofit professionals annually
- Designed and implemented training in health communications for Gates Malaria Partnership for health professionals from Ghana, Tanzania and Malawi
